Description

Power of the Pen is a unique opportunity for talented Ohio student writers to stretch their skills and creativity outside of the classroom.  Through weekly practice, mini-lessons, and group discussion, students work to increase their knowledge of themselves as writers.  Writing teachers act as coaches.  Two separate teams are formed from seventh and eighth grade students.  Along with the opportunity to embrace writing as a challenge and competitive activity, students share in exposure to great writers such as Stephanie Tolan ( Surviving the Applewhites ) and Sharon Draper ( Tears of a Tiger & Copper Sun ) when they qualify for the State Finals.  For years, Bethany School has been proud to have students qualify to participate in the State Finals at the College of Wooster.

*”Power of the Pen inspires a love for the beauty and power of language for writing as a life skill.  It encourages creative and critical thinking, and enriches and enhances the writing curriculum of the school.”
– *From the Power of the Pen mission statement

Notes

Two Competition Teams are determined by early December.

They are limited to 6 members at each grade level. Two alternates, at each grade level, are identified in case of illness.  Volunteers may be enlisted to assist the work of the contest.  Writers’ work will be evaluated through the same format used at contest to select our Bethany competition teams.  Students may be excused from a practice for illness or doctor’s appointments.  Notification of absence via email from a parent is appreciated.  Students are asked to bring a spiral notebook.
